How to Identify Sustainability Risks & Adverse Impacts: Highlights from CSR Europe's “Due Diligence in Action” Atelier Series

On the 23rd of April, corporate members of CSR Europe convened in Brussels for the workshop “How to Identify Sustainability Risks & Adverse Impacts”. This was the second session of the "Due Diligence in Action" Atelier series and focused on to exploring strategies for implementing effective risk assessment practices within the framework of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) and the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Business Conduct.

Throughout the half-day event, representatives of different companies explored practical steps for identifying and evaluating adverse impacts on human rights and the environment across corporate operations and supply chains. Following a comprehensive explanation of the second step in the six-step due diligence process by Bettina Grabmayr, Director Methodology & Research at EcoVadis, participants engaged in a group exercise centred around a risk assessment scenario. The exercise aimed to establish and implement effective risk assessment practices, considering:

  1. Risk & Stakeholder Identification

  2. Risk Prioritisation

  3. Risk Evaluation

Industry experts, including speakers from Euroclear, Titan Cement, and Umicore, enriched the discussions with valuable case studies and experiences. They provided first-hand insights on the integration of sustainability considerations into business operations. To conclude the workshop, the European Commission's Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW) highlighted supporting measures and policies available to assist companies in aligning with the requirements outlined in the CS3D.
